Blue Zones Blue Hand Dance

Nick Schauff put a video together of our Blue Zones Blue Hand dance.    People of all ages came to dance.  We had a gym full of enthusiastic movers and shakers who thought this was so much fun we need to do this again.   And we will.  Watch for the announcement of the next Blue Zones Blue Hand dance.  Meanwhile you can see our first video on You Tube.  Search for Oelwein Blue Zone.

Oelwein Schools and Food and Fitness

What's Happening?
The Oelwein Schools and students have been working to incorporate a healthy life style into the school environment.  As with everything, leadership counts and we have outstanding leaders.  Scott Smalley, instructor for the Oelwein award winning agriculture science program, Autumn Kelly, OSCD Food Service Director, and elementary guidance and at-risk teachers Barb Schmitz and Terri Zuck.  Terry Rex, 4th grade teacher is the Fuel Up to Play 60 Instructor of the Year and promotes the program throughout the elementary schools.  A sample of their work is shown below...
A School Garden was planted at one of the elementary buildings.
Fall Harvest Fair was held September 21, 2011 at the High School Cafeteria.  Several vendors from the Oelwein Farmers’ Market sold their produce, FFA students had booths to teach nutrition, how to make healthier snacks and a tasting of various dairy products, and the food service director and the cooks made ratatouille, stir fry and served squash cookies.  Families were able to do activities to get a book, a free pumpkin and coloring activities.  About 100 people attended this event..
Healthy Snacks and Time have been provided to Dads of the Kindergarten through 5th grade students.  Each grade level has a time for the students’ dads to come to school and share a healthy snack with them.  Over 500 children with their dads attend school to share time with their child.
Second grade students invited their families to attend a supper of locally grown foods.  100 people attended this evening hearing about the 2 X 2 Kind Hearted Kids Program and about Oelwein and the Blue Zone from the Oelwein Superintendent of Schools.
Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program supported by the NFL and the National Dairy Promotion Board.  Students in the grades 2-5 have made a commitment to make healthy food choices and do a daily 60 min. physical activity.  Classrooms are including physical activity minutes into their school day.  Students will be given opportunities throughout the school year to taste and make new food choices.
Kindergarten students participate in Fitness Fridays once per month.  Students learn about their bodies, nutrition and physical activities and games.
Oelwein Elementary T shirts are sold each year to promote our chartacter building program.  This year our focus it "Respect."  Our curriculum focus is to enable students to feel a sense of belonging to the school, treat each other with respect and to stop bullying in the elementary.
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank supports the Operation Backpack Program to give 150 students bags of food twice a month in the head start, preschool and elementary grades.
We have also presented to various community groups to educate the public about the need to be connected to the schools and the children.  Topics have included proverty, character buiding, the backpack program, Food & Fitness, Camp Creamery, the family suppers, the clothing and school supply needs for the children and Puppet Pals.  Program supporters such as United Way and Food & Fitness are contacted yearly to apply for grants to support our programs.
The Oelwein FFA program collaborates with Oelwein Food and Fitness.  Examples of that collaboration for 2011/2012 are…

Oelwein and Collaboration

Part of the Blue Zones application is to provide evidence of how Oelwein collaborates with others.  Perhaps it is because of necessity, or our size, or the vision we have for the future of Oelwein, but collaboration has been a part of our make up for the last decade.

Enrichment Center:  This center is a community owned facility that is governed by four separate 28E agreements that define the operations of each unit…….

Sports Complex
Another example of our Community’s resourcefulness occurred in 2003… a collaborative partnership was developed to accomplish the common goal financing and operating a new sports facility.

A third example of the community’s ability to collaborate and successfully advance community initiatives is the RAMS Center.
